      Sadly...

Do you know/have the Windows 7 key? On devices that old, they were not always embedded yet.

If so, just install Windows 10 R1511 and enter the key. It should activate.

Oh really? That's way better. Thanks. Will try that right away. Yes, I have the real key on a sticker, thankfully.

YOu can also grab the GenuineTicket.xml from inside Windows 7 and activate the upgrade rights that way

Open the Windows 10 ISO inside Windows 7. Navigate to sources folder. Copy gatherosstate.exe to your desktop run it as admin copy the resulting GenuineTicket.xml to a USB drive or something. Install Windows 10 clean. After getting logged in the first time, copy the xml file to C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\ClipSVC\GenuineTicket Reboot. Windows 10 will be activated with the digital entitlement.

I installed Firefox Portable and removed standard FireFox. Something between v32 and v42 changed the way that profiles are handled and they can't deal with data that's copied/imaged in the way that Personas/View handles %appdata%.

Odd. I haven't run into this yet, I'd knock on wood, but it's all fake plastic around me right now.

Just a note that the rollup breaks some VMware networking, specifically VMXNet3 adapters.

Folders in that list that don't have the double folder within a folder icon are not OUs. As such GPO's don't apply to objects in them.

learned this the hard way a long time ago.

I guess I don't understand what this means. What icon are you talking about?

      Missed this.

I'm confused - You're using folder redirection, so the local copy of the data is only there for speed or network connectivity loss. So there should be nearly zero data loss if you delete the profile after the user logs out.

I'm not sure if there is a reg key on Windows Workstation OS, but there definitely is on Server OS for Remote Desktop Services.

This was something I've seen often turned on to keep the local storage needs of the RDS server from ballooning out of control from left over profiles.

User logs into RDS, downloads profile, user logs out - copy is pushed to the server and local directory is deleted.

      Pretty standard practice.

I'd be surprised if this wasn't available on say Windows 7, etc.

These vendors know, that over a period of time, the client becomes totally dependent on their product, that they (vendors) can dish out any bullshit, and be rest assured that the client would HAVE to lap it up .. To an extent, the client himself is to be blamed for this..

What's amazing, though, is that customers accept this crap the first time. Once the vendor "owns" them, sure, they feel trapped. But at some point, this insanity goes on and people make themselves trapped voluntarily!

No - User accounts are 'left' so that is connection to the AD / DC is lost, then the user can still log on.

That's not totally true, all profiles files are left, that doesn't mean you can still login to it necessarily. There's no process for AD to talk to the local computer to tell it the user was removed. It is just a directory service, The local computer has to request to login to the account. There is no method AD to tell computers anything changed without them requesting.

Easier question to ask - did any computers loose power at all? If the answer is yes, then ask, was it all or just some? If some, then possibly you had a 3 phase power related issue. If not, then this is not an issue.

The key...if you're into functional GPO's (vs. monolithic) is having an effective and meaningful OU structure. Otherwise, half of your time will be creating security filters or specific targeting which can get very confusing very quickly.

The performance impact of processing GPO's in general is negligible, but it does depend on what that GPO is doing (i.e. deploying software in general or printers over slow links? Have a seat and grab a cup of coffee). I would be more concerned if you have slow links at your sites - if this is the case, you need to ensure that you have Sites and Services configured appropriately and a RODC at your remote site to facilitate speedy logins.

Being aware of GPO enforcement (which you should try to avoid) and LSDO ordering will help you tons.

There's really no right or wrong way to deploy GPO's as it is more about what you're doing with them, how they are deploying, and what you're deploying them to.

Personally, my preference is to break my GPO's out to functional objects - i.e. this one is for security, this one is for desktop preferences, this one is for drive mappings, etc.
